Direct sewer connections

A description of direct sewer connection projects and the roles and responsibilities of the Local Public Agency team and the local agency.

Definition

Direct connections are sewer connections made directly to the King County sewer system. The connection point can be on a King County pipe, maintenance hole, or sewer stub designated for future connections.

There are two types of direct connections: joint-use direct connections and local agency direct connections.

 

A joint-use direct connection is a private sewer connection directly to the King County sewer. Examples of joint-use direct connections include, but are not limited to, single-family houses, businesses, gas stations, or restaurants. Note that the private sewer upstream of the connection point to the King County sewer falls under the jurisdiction of the Local Agency (i.e. City Public Works, Public Utility, or Wastewater District) and will need go through the Local Agency’s approval process and review of easement and joint-use requirements.

 

A local agency direct connection is a new local agency connection directly to a King County sewer pipe, maintenance hole, or stub off the main pipeline. This type of connection is owned by the Local Agency and allows for future sewer extensions for new housing developments, shopping centers, or businesses.

 

Direct Connection Requirements


Requirements for a joint-use direct connection are as follows:

  • Proposals for a joint-use sewer connection should be first checked by the Local Agency for any available local sewer connection before considering a connection to the King County sewer.
  • If there is no local sewer service available for connection, please contact the LPA Team to coordinate an optimal point of connection to King County’s sewer line. The applicant can be involved during this coordination to ensure they are informed of King County requirements.
  • Submit both preliminary and final design plans for joint-use connections to the LPA team for review and approval. 
  • Notify the LPA Team to attend the pre-construction meeting. Please see our Construction Requirements.


Requirements for a local agency direct connection are as follows:

  • Please contact the LPA Team to coordinate a point of connection to the King County sewer.
  • Submit both preliminary and final plans showing the plan and profile of the anticipated connection point to the LPA Team for review and approval. 
  • Notify the LPA team to attend the pre-construction meeting. Please see our Construction Requirements.
     


Our team’s role

  • The LPA team reviews the preliminary plans and provides requirements that outline the conditions for the direct connection.
  • Upon receiving the final plans, the LPA reviews and provides approval in the form of a letter addressed to the Local Agency.
  • The LPA Inspector will attend the pre-construction meeting and be on-site during the construction of the direct connection.
