Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of working towards equity and justice rang out clearly on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the 5th Avenue Theatre when King County employees gathered to honor Dr. King. The celebration theme this year was: The Struggle Continues.

This year's program featured excerpts from "Keepers of the Dream," a readers' theatre performance piece inspired by the Pulitzer Prize winning book "I Dream A World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America."

Through slides, words and song, it weaves together excerpts from many of these women's lives creating an eloquent tribute to those who have managed to create a life of meaning and beauty, even in the face of extreme hardship and prejudice.

Performers were Patrinell Wright of The Total Experience Gospel Choir; Josie Howell, last seen on Seattle stages in "Black Nativity," "Our Town" and "Crowns"; Jacqueline Moscou, actress/director, currently an Artistic Associate of Intiman theatre and the Artistic Director of The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center and Ana Maria, singer/dancer last seen in Intiman's "Black Nativity."

The celebration included the annual presentation of the Humanitarian awards and recognition of the best eighth grade essay about Dr. King. King County employees provided their voice and instrumental talents in performing the America the Beautiful, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and This Land is Your Land.

The celebration began with an excerpt from Dr. King's speech: Where Do We Go From Here? For the entire text of the speech "Where Do We Go From Here?" by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., August 16, 1967, visit the AfricanAmericans.com Web site. (external link)
