Story

King County Executive Dow Constantine spent the day serving customers in Kent at the Community Service Center as the first in a series of visits walking in the shoes of county employees.

“The employees are on the front lines of customer service with experience, insights and innovations,” said Executive Constantine. “We know that they have untapped ideas about how to make the county work better.”

Constantine spent the day processing marriage license applications, registering residents to vote, providing residents with available job listings, processing passport applications and more. There are seven Community Service Center locations within King County, which allow residents to obtain services without having to drive into downtown Seattle.

Patricia Dougherty was the employee selected for a visit from Executive Constantine. “I was nervous at first,” said Dougherty. “But I was really glad I got to show the Executive what we do in the Community Service Center programs. It was a great day, and I think he really understands what it’s like to provide great customer service.”

Announced at his 100 day speech, the "Walk in the Shoes of a County Employee" competition provides employees with an opportunity to give the Executive a glimpse into their average work-day. To enter the competition, employees completed an invitation form that included the reasons why their position contributes to the success of their department, and why their job is important to the residents of King County. Executive Constantine selects winners personally.

“The Community Service Centers are a great way for me to see how residents use our services, and how we can improve customer service,” continued Constantine. “I really enjoyed spending the day with Patricia meeting folks who needed basic county services - helping couples apply for marriage licenses and families get passports.”
