Repair work to close Preston-Fall City Road

Summary

Drivers who travel Preston-Fall City Road east of Issaquah should plan ahead for a lengthy five-day detour starting July 8 as King County Road Services crews completely close a portion of the road for emergency repairs.

Story

Complete closure scheduled July 8-12 to repair drainage system east of Issaquah; paving project also planned

Drivers who travel Preston-Fall City Road east of Issaquah should plan ahead for a lengthy five-day detour starting July 8 as King County Road Services crews completely close a portion of the road for emergency repairs.

Work is scheduled to start July 1, beginning with minor traffic delays during intermittent single-lane closures near the 7600 block – halfway between Preston and Fall City. Groundwater near the roadway caused the drainage system and edge of the roadway to settle and sink. Crews will replace the damaged drainage system.

From July 8-12, drivers and crews face the project's biggest challenge with the complete closure of a portion of Preston-Fall City Road north of Interstate 90 between Preston and Fall City. The road will be closed to through-traffic and some drivers face a potential 12-mile detour that could take up to 20 minutes. Metro Transit operates Route 209 on Preston-Fall City Road and reroute information is expected to be posted online when available.

During the complete closure, crews plan to dig a trench up to 16 feet deep across all lanes to install a new 12-inch-diameter drain pipe 11 feet beneath the roadway.

Road engineers continue to monitor the developing situation in case the road must be closed sooner.

County crews also plan a three-mile-long paving project along the road in July, and drivers should prepare for possible 20-minute delays during that work. On a typical weekday, Preston-Fall City Road carries about 16,000 vehicles.

Notices were posted June 27 alerting drivers of the upcoming roadwork and closures. Drivers are asked to please travel through the work zone with caution.

If construction schedules or plans change, updated information will be posted online and shared via @kcroads on Twitter and via county road alerts.

Note: There also is a month-long road closure of West Snoqualmie Valley Road from Northeast 100th Street to Novelty Hill Road July 8 to Aug. 4.
