As of July 10, 2018, this outbreak appears over. Public Health investigated an outbreak of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella Javiana, with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Public Health investigators have not identified any common foods, restaurants, or other sources among all three people.


Since December 26, 2017, Public Health has learned of three people (two King County residents and one Pierce County resident) who were infected with the same strain of Salmonella Javiana.

All three ill people are adults; illness onset dates ranged from Dec 2, 2017 to March 28, 2018, and all three have recovered.

Public Health actions

On April 19, 2018, Environmental Health investigators visited Providence Mount St. Vincent, a senior care center located in West Seattle, and collected environmental samples. Two of the three people infected with this strain of Salmonella Javiana spent time at and consumed food from Providence Mount St. Vincent prior to becoming ill. During the field inspection, investigators did not identify any food handling or patient care practices that could increase the risk for Salmonella infection among patients, nor were any ill employees identified.

Laboratory testing

All three people who got sick tested positive for Salmonella Javiana. DNA fingerprinting was performed on the Salmonella bacteria from the three ill people using techniques called pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and whole genome sequencing. The DNA fingerprint was identical for all three ill people, suggesting a common source of infection.

Salmonella was not found in environmental samples collected from Providence Mount St. Vincent on April 19, 2018.

Public Health message

At this time, there is no indication of ongoing illness.

Public Health investigators have not identified any common foods, restaurants, or other sources among all three people. There is no evidence that the Providence Mount St. Vincent is the source of this outbreak. Providence Mount St. Vincent has not identified any other staff or residents reporting illness or symptoms suggestive of a Salmonella infection. The third person in this outbreak did not spend any time at or eat any food made at Providence Mount St. Vincent.

About Salmonella

Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection that is often spread through the fecal-oral route, through contaminated food and water, or through contact with animals and their environments. Symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fever, chills, and abdominal cramping. Illness typically lasts several days and people can spread infection to others even after symptoms resolve.

To prevent Salmonella infection:

  • Wash hands with soap and water after going to the bathroom, changing diapers, touching animals, and before eating or preparing food.
  • Cook all meats thoroughly, especially poultry.
Wash cutting boards and counters used for meat or poultry preparation immediately after use to avoid cross contaminating other foods.
