King County Elections Announces Recount Plans

Summary

Following certification of results last week, King County Elections will hold recounts for City Council positions in Bothell, Redmond, and Mercer Island on Wednesday, December 4th and Thursday, December 5th.

Story

As this election comes to a close, it lives on for King County Elections and candidates in three city council races. Bothell City Council Position 2 candidates Leigh Henderson and Mason Thompson are separated by 5 votes and 0.043%, qualifying for a hand recount. In Redmond City Council Position 1, candidates Varisha Khan and Hank Meyers are separated by 66 votes and 0.498%. Daniel Thompson and Dave Rosenbaum are separated by 40 votes and 0.418% in their race for Mercer Island City Council Position 1. Both the Redmond and Mercer Island races qualify for a machine recount.

To qualify for a mandatory recount, races must meet one of two thresholds: fewer than 2,000 votes and less than 0.5% separating the candidates for a machine recount and fewer than 150 votes and less than 0.25% for a hand recount. Candidates and campaigns may also request a recount, either of specific precincts or the entire district. No additional recounts were requested for the 2019 General.

King County Elections will conduct these recounts in accordance with Washington State law. Hand recount activities will begin on Wednesday, December 4 at 8:30 am at Elections HQ in Renton and continue through Thursday, December 5. The machine recount will be conducted in the morning of December 5, beginning at 8:30 am. Certification of recount results will take place at 10 am on Friday, December 6.

Media and designated observers from both campaigns are welcome to attend and encouraged to reach out to King County Elections to ensure space on the ballot processing floor.
