Waste reduction and recycling (level one)

• Tillicum Middle School has a 43 percent recycling rate.
• The City of Bellevue partnered with the Green Schools Program to assist Bellevue schools with recycling improvements.

• The school’s green team shared tips about recycling on the school’s daily news broadcast.
• A video about waste reduction and recycling was created by the team and shown to all students.
• The green team organized a “green week” and invited the City of Bellevue to set up a recycling booth at lunch to help promote recycling practices. The booth was visited by 175 students.
• During green week a raffle was held in which students that recycled received a ticket. Ticket holders had a chance to win prizes from the City of Bellevue that included reusable bags, recycling decals and pens and pencils made from recycled tires, recycled currency, recycled newspaper and recycled denim.
• The green team promoted the school’s recycling program by creating posters, making morning announcements and writing an article for the parent newsletter.
• The school administration sent an e-mail to staff encouraging them to recycle.
• Students and staff recycle milk cartons, bottles and cans in the cafeteria.
• All classrooms, offices and the cafeteria have recycling containers and recycling stickers.
• Students promote resource conservation and recycling through morning announcements.
• In 2011-12, the school placed new recycling stickers on recycling containers throughout the school.

Energy conservation (level two)

• The eighth grade class had the "Be the Solution" workshop from Nature Vision.
• Students posted signs near lights to remind staff and students to turn them off when not in use.
• Students participated in an energy conservation patrol and worked with classrooms to make a pledge to conserve energy.
• Students created a display about energy conservation and the relationship between reducing electric use and saving salmon.
• Staff and students were reminded to conserve energy and dress for the season through morning announcements and staff bulletins.

Water conservation and pollution prevention (level three)

• The school held a “Green Week” to promote conservation with emphasis on water conservation practices.
• The green team used the water conservation resource tub from the City of Bellevue.
• Green team students made three videos that were used in all classrooms to promote water conservation.  The video links were also sent home to all Tillicum families in the online weekly newsletter.
