Waste reduction and recycling (level one)

  • Shorecrest High School achieved a recycling rate of 44 percent.
  • The Environmental Club conducted a waste assessment by looking at materials placed in the garbage bins during lunch to see how much could have been recycled or collected for compost.
  • Environmental Club students created videos to teach students and staff members how to properly sort recyclable and compostable materials in the lunchroom.
  • Environmental Club students monitored lunchroom recycling stations. Students who signed up to help with lunchroom monitoring earned community service hours.
  • Recycling signs were placed on each classroom and lunchroom recycling bin, and the Environmental Club made signs and hung them in the lunchroom to showcase which materials can be collected for recycling and composting.
  • Waste reduction and recycling announcements were made in the school's News Network and on its Facebook page.
  • Recycling and compost containers were regularly emptied by custodial staff.
  • To reduce paper use, teachers posted documents online so that students could access them with their iPads.
