Success story: Meridian Elementary School
School District: Kent
School Location: Kent
Began participating in the Green Schools Program: September 2010
Level One of the Green Schools Program: Achieved in May 2011
Waste reduction and recycling
- Meridian Elementary increased its recycling rate from 25 percent to 40 percent.
- To achieve this increase, the school improved classroom recycling and initiated recycling of cans, bottles and milk cartons in the lunchroom.
- School staff placed recycling stickers on classroom and lunchroom recycling containers listing what can and can’t be recycled.
- Posters were hung throughout the school to remind students to recycle.
- Each grade level was instructed on how to properly recycle and how waste reduction, recycling and composting conserve natural resources.
- In 2010 and 2011, students attended The Earth Day Fair at Salt Water State Park. The Fair promotes stewardship of our earth through interactive exhibits and informational booths on recycling, the watershed, wildlife preservation, proper waste management and national and community service.
- Students also participated in a tree planting program sponsored by King County Parks and Recreation.
- Meridian Elementary practices monthly virtues to help students understand good citizenship, community contribution, and moral responsibility. The month of April is Clean and Green Month in celebration of Earth Day and recycling.
Energy conservation
- Staff conserves energy by turning off electronic equipment and lights when they are not needed.
