Waste reduction and recycling (Level one)

  • Led by a core group of 35 members of the 200-member Key Club, Kentridge High School initiated a school-wide recycling program. As a result of the outreach and education done by Key Club, students are more aware of the importance of waste reduction and recycling and are taking initiative around the school to reduce waste.
  • Kentridge High School maintains a 43 percent recycling rate.
  • Staff added recycling containers to the lunchroom for milk cartons, plastic bottles and aluminum cans, and placed stickers listing what can and can’t be recycled on all school recycling containers.
  • Staff and student lunchroom monitors educate and encourage students to recycle during lunch period.
  • Key Club members placed one-sided paper reuse trays in each classroom to reduce paper use.
  • To promote the school’s waste reduction and recycling efforts, Key Club students and staff presented recycling tips in morning announcements, school newsletters, on a school bulletin board, and displayed on posters in the lunchroom.
  • As part of a district-wide decision to reduce waste, the school replaced plastic-wrapped utensils with loose utensils and eliminated straws in the lunchroom.
