School District: Northshore
School Location: Kenmore
Began participating in the Green Schools Program: September 2015
Level One of the Green Schools Program: Achieved in May 2016
Waste reduction and recycling (level one)
- The school increased its recycling rate by more than 20 percent by educating students and staff on how and what to recycle.
- The school used advisory time once each month to promote green practices.
- The Green Team held a contest between the two lunch periods at Kenmore Junior High to see which lunch period generated the least amount of garbage. Second lunch defeated first lunch in the contest.
- For the cafeteria, students created three-dimensional posters with actual recyclable and garbage items on each poster to show which materials are recyclable and which are not.
- The Green Team conducted an Earth Day presentation to the entire school, teaching fellow students about environmental sustainability and leading them in a recycling relay.
