Waste reduction and recycling (level one)
- The school increased its recycling rate from 27 percent to 50 percent.
- As part of a district-wide decision to reduce waste, the school replaced plastic-wrapped utensils with loose utensils and eliminated straws in the lunchroom.
- Student council members promote waste reduction and recycling efforts through education announcements and by placing signs near recycling containers. These students were also trained to assist with lunchroom container monitoring.
- Through the school’s newsletter, Jenkins Creek shares information about its waste reduction and recycling practices.
- In 2012-13, fourth and sixth grade classes participated in King County elementary classroom workshops to train staff and students about the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and habitat stewardship.
