Waste reduction and recycling (level one)

  • Brookside Elementary School achieved a recycling rate of 67 percent.
  • Students created a recycling video and educated classmates about what can and cannot be recycled.
  • Green Team students taught each classroom how to recycle, and signs were placed on recycling bins listing what items can be recycled.
  • Brookside placed recycling containers in each classroom and in the lunchroom, and started to recycle milk cartons.
  • Para-educator Lori Gamman and custodian Ranee Gigrich trained students to be lunchroom monitors and developed a schedule for students to monitor each lunch period.
  • To reduce paper use, assignments were posted online instead of printed.
