Dockton Park marina on Maury Island remains closed except for limited day use; Phase 1 renovations slated to commence in August

Summary

The marina at King County’s Dockton Park on Maury Island remains closed, except for limited day use on a first come, first served basis. King County Parks moves closer to constructing the first phase of dock renovations later this summer.

Story

The marina at King County’s Dockton Park is closed, except for a small area that is available for day use only, on a first-come, first served basis. The park’s restrooms remain closed, but there is a portable toilet on site. All other amenities at the park, such as the boat ramp and play area, are open.

King County Parks urges visitors to practice physical distancing at all times, and visitors are required to use face coverings when physical distancing can’t be maintained, such as when walking along the docks, per the state’s June 26 Department of Health order.

Closed since March 2019, the marina is in need of significant renovation. More than 80 percent of the facility requires repair, including the outer, breakwater dock area and interior finger piers. King County Parks has been progressing on a construction project that will renovate the marina in phases over the next several years.

The first phase is expected to go to construction this August. As the project requires in-water construction, the work can only be carried out during a short, specific timeframe called the “fish window,” which is when endangered salmon and surf smelt are less likely to be in the vicinity. This is a requirement of King County’s construction permit with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Phase One work includes:

  • Removing and replacing old interior wooden creosote piles with steel piles
  • Replacing interior finger dock sections with ecologically-appropriate grated floats
  • Replacing the pump-out station

During construction, there will be a large barge and piledriving equipment at the marina, and at a couple different points the work will require a complete closure of the marina for approximately a week each. Parks anticipates completing construction and re-opening the interior finger pier section of the marina in April 2021.

Future phases of the renovation project will be constructed as funding becomes available and include:

  • Encapsulating or replacing remaining creosote piles
  • Replacing the floats on the outer breakwater section
  • Other safety and maintenance items

Current construction is funded in part by a Boating Facilities Program grant from the state Recreation and Conservation Office and by the 2020-2025 King County Parks, Recreation, Trails, and Open Space Levy.
