Kohl-Welles issues statement on brief wastewater bypass Wednesday at West Point plant

Summary

King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles issued a statement Wednesday after learning of a brief wastewater bypass at the West Point Treatment Plant.

Story

King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles issued the following statement Wednesday after learning of a brief wastewater bypass at the West Point Treatment Plant:

“I’m disheartened to learn that an accident at the West Point Treatment Plant has caused yet another discharge of raw sewage into the Salish Sea.

“Fortunately, the discharge could have been a lot worse but, unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened, and it may not be the last.

“I applaud the Wastewater Treatment Division for acting so quickly to get the matter under control. This could have been a major catastrophe without their fast action.

“In the meantime, I plan on meeting with WTD to understand what happened in more detail and will continue to work diligently to ensure we have a system that works efficiently to process our regions wastewater while also maintaining the health and vitality of our Puget Sound waterways.”
