Best Starts for Kids Indicators

Best Starts for Kids Indicators

These Best Starts for Kids indicators provide important information about the health and well-being of King County children, youth, families, and communities.

Information is organized into four areas:

  • Prenatal to 5 years: Babies are born healthy and are provided with a strong foundation for lifelong health and well-being.
  • 5 to 24 years: King County is a place where everyone has equitable opportunities to be safe and healthy as they progress through childhood, building academic and life skills to be thriving members of their communities.
  • Youth and family homelessness prevention: Providing resources and case management supports to prevent young people and their families from losing stable housing.
  • Communities of Opportunity: Supporting communities to create equitable conditions in housing, health, economic opportunity, and community connections so children and families can thrive.

Best Starts uses population-level measures to identify needs, understand baseline conditions and track the conditions we want to change. Best Starts strategies intend to contribute to population level (county-wide) results in the long term, while also understanding that the whole community across multiple sectors is responsible for county-wide conditions, and many additional factors influence these outcomes. Please review the Health Equity Timeline on Communities Count to learn about ways in which local historical and structural context has contributed to the conditions measured by population indicator data.
