Holiday closure Monday May 28: Most county offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

Paying your fare on the Water Taxi

You may use a PugetPass, ORCA card, or cash to pay King County Water Taxi fares. As you board the vessel, either show your PugetPass, tap your ORCA card on the card reader held by a crew member, or deposit the exact cash fare in the fare box.

  • No change will be given to passengers who pay cash fares.
  • There are no change or ticket machines at the Vashon or Seattle ferry terminals.
  • No credits cards or checks are accepted at the vessel.
  • An ATM is located at Colman Dock - Pier 52 located one block north of Pier 50 in Downtown Seattle.

ORCA

The King County Water Taxi has joined seven other public transportation agencies participating in the region’s new smart card passenger fare collection system called ORCA. The ORCA card is a plastic reusable card that contains a microprocessor chip which stores pre-paid monthly passes or an electronic purse (E-purse). This card became available in the spring of 2009 and is slowly replacing the PugetPass and many transit- or ferry-specific passes. The seven transit agency partners in ORCA are King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Community Transit, Pierce Transit, Everett Transit, Sound Transit and Washinton State Ferries.

If your card is loaded with an E-purse, the cost of the trip will be deducted from the transportation value in your E-purse. If you have a regional pass, the reader will recognize the trip value or your pass as fare payment.  If the trip value of your pass is less than the Water Taxi fare, you may pay the balance in cash.  For example, if you are traveling to or from West Seattle and you have loaded a transit pass with a trip value of $2.25 on your ORCA card, you may still use your ORCA card to pay part of the $3 one-way Water Taxi trip fare; but you will need to pay the balance of $0.75 in cash as you board the vessel.

You can purchase and load value onto an ORCA card in the following ways:

To pay your fare with your ORCA card as you board the vessel, tap your card on the card reader held by the deckhand.
