About Travel Forecasting and Transportation Data

TAZ imageThe Travel Demand Forecast Model is the foundation for many King County program applications and is also frequently used for data and forecast requests from other area jurisdictions. It was developed by the King County Road Services Division to address the need for Countywide Transportation analysis, ranging from project-specific analysis for King County Capital Improvement Projects to Countywide alternative testing and other analyses.

The Travel Demand Forecast Model provides a unique tool for testing the impacts of regional land use and proposed road networks. Major applications of the King County Travel Demand Model include King County programs such as the Roads Capital Improvement Program, King County Comprehensive Plan, Mitigation Payment System, and Transportation Concurrency Program. Other applications include special studies and requests from other jurisdictions.

Land use (households, jobs) and transportation data (roadway speeds, capacities, traffic counts) are the core information used in transportation planning, including analysis at the countywide, sub-area and project-level. Special studies for regional impacts of major or statewide and regional transportation programs, sub-area analyses for areas within King County, impact analysis of individual road projects, as well as travel model development all rely heavily on this data to analyze transportation problems.
