Vision
Over the next several years, King County's population is predicted to grow significantly, resulting in increased automobile, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic and congestion. Public/political scrutiny and expectations are also expected to escalate, while we continue to face limited resources. These challenges will be met by utilizing technology, emphasizing professional training, promoting regional coordination, and seeking innovative new solutions to increase traffic and safety management, program efficiency, and public confidence.

About the Traffic Engineering and Maintenance Section
The King County Traffic Engineering and Maintenance Section provides traffic engineering, operations, traffic studies, signal systems operations and maintenance of all traffic signs and pavement markings in unincorporated King County and for contract cities. Led by the County Traffic Engineer, the Section is responsible for promoting safety in neighborhoods and on county arterials. We design, construct, maintain and operate the County's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) through a Traffic Control Center.
The Traffic Section administers a Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program to help provide safer neighborhoods countywide. We also maintain a traffic accident record management program and a High Accident Location/High Accident Roadway Segment (HAL/HARS) program to focus remedial safety actions where they are needed most. We provide traffic engineering development review for developments in unincorporated King County. The Section is involved in a variety of activities with citizens and community groups to interact on any issue related to traffic safety.
