Key elements of the update
- Incorporates current design and construction standards.
- Strengthens public safety requirements, includes additional sidewalk requirements, and places greater emphasis on replacement of utility structures within the right of way.
- Strengthens requirements to reduce construction impacts on road users, including road closures, and detours.
- Supports King County’s Comprehensive Plan, Critical Areas Code, Surface Water Manual, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Updates and clarifies Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
- Clarifies and modifies bikeways and equestrian standards.
- Reinforces authority and duties of inspectors and quality control.
- Reduces roadway width on local rural roads.
- Improves street tree and landscaping criteria.
- Includes provisions for low impact development.
- Provides user-friendly document improvements and includes drawings illustrating many of the design requirements.
