Pre-construction work starting on Novelty Hill

Preliminary work has begun to set the stage for summer road construction on and around Northeast Novelty Hill Road east of Redmond.

King County is planning a two-year project to make improvements on Novelty Hill Road, 195th/196th Avenue Northeast, and Northeast Union Hill Road. Before that work can begin in late June, local utility companies are relocating their lines, which include clearing and trimming trees and brush in the project area.

The utility relocation work may reduce the roadways to a single lane from time to time, but only during non-peak travel times between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There should be no full road closures during this work.

When the county begins project construction in late June, work will start along Novelty Hill Road and 196th/195th Avenue Northeast. The construction along Union Hill Road is not likely to begin until 2011. The entire project will continue through 2012.

The King County Road Services Division project will make the following improvements:

  • Rebuild 195th/196th Avenue Northeast with full shoulders;
  • Build a new section of road on 195th Avenue Northeast to connect from Northeast 95th Street to Novelty Hill Road;
  • Widen Union Hill Road between 196th Avenue Northeast and 192nd Avenue Northeast; and
  • Install roundabouts at the intersections of 196th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Novelty Hill Road and at 196th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Union Hill Road.
