Celebrate new Burien transit center & town square June 13
Celebrate the grand opening of the Burien Town Square and King County Metro’s new Burien Transit Center on Saturday morning, June 13.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the transit center, new city hall, new King County Library, and new residential/retail units will begin at 10 a.m. near the corner of Southwest 152nd Street and 4th Avenue Southwest. Following the ceremony, guests can view the interior of the city hall/library building, enjoy art and music in the nearby plaza/park, and stroll over to see the transit center located nearby at 209 SW 148th St.
Refreshments will be available and entertainers will perform until 2 p.m. in the park and inside the library. And, Discover Burien is sponsoring activities with coupons and prizes donated by downtown merchants.
Metro actually opened its $12.5 million Burien Transit Center on May 30. Metro’s project team worked cooperatively with the City of Burien to integrate the transit center into the city’s downtown revitalization plans.
It features six bus bays for passenger boarding, including one dedicated to paratransit service. All of the boarding areas are now located off-street, enhancing safety for both transit customers and motorists in downtown Burien.
The transit center has covered waiting areas with benches and windscreens. The adjacent park-and-ride lot has parking for 340 vehicles and includes five charging stations for electric vehicles. The transit center has lighting and 24/7 monitored security.
The Burien Transit Center is served by Metro and Sound Transit bus routes providing connections to major King County destinations including:
- SeaTac Airport – Routes 140/180/560
- Southcenter – Route 140
- Renton – Routes 140/560
- Bellevue – ST Express 560
- University District – Route133
- Downtown Seattle – Routes 120, 121, 122, 123
Overall, there are 12 bus routes generating about 550 daily bus trips through the Burien Transit Center. On weekdays, there are about 4,466 passenger boardings at the new facility.
Starting next February, Route 140 will be revised to provide a direct connection between the Burien Transit Center and the new Tukwila International Boulevard Link light rail station. The 9-10 minute trip should make connecting between bus and train quick and easy.
