Rainier Beach gets In Motion

This summer, residents of the Rainier Beach neighborhood in Seattle have extra motivation to leave their cars behind and increase their use of transit, carpooling, biking and walking.

King County Metro Transit is partnering with area organizations – including the Rainier Chamber of Commerce, Rainier Health and Fitness Center, the Atlantic Street Center, Puget Sound Neighborhood Health Center, Steps to Health King County – and others to get Rainier Beach “In Motion.” The Rainier Beach In Motion program provides residents with travel information and opportunities to earn rewards for trying new ways of getting around.

The Rainier Beach plan is based on successful In Motion programs previously held in various Seattle and Bellevue neighborhoods. It will encourage Rainier Beach residents who register for the program to commit to leaving their car at home at least two trips a week, and record their travel behavior during the ten-week duration of the program. Rewards include Metro free ride tickets, redeemable vouchers, and passes to the Rainier Beach Pool, Woodland Park Zoo, and more.

Those eligible for the program are residents who are older than 16 years, own a car, and live within the project area bounded by South Holden Street, Lake Washington Boulevard South, South Bangor Street, and Renton Avenue South.

The Rainier Beach In Motion campaign will be starting June 25 and continue through the summer. Look for posters and signs to start appearing on lawns and windows in the area soon. Households located in the program boundaries will receive informational brochures by the end of the month. Local business sponsors with the In Motion decal will also have information about the program in their stores.

If you would like more information about the Rainier Beach In Motion program, visit the In Motion website, or call the Rainier Beach Chamber of Commerce at (206) 725-2010.
