Baring Bridge work may cause long traffic delays

King County will be making repairs to the Baring Bridge over the South Fork of the Skykomish River for approximately three weeks beginning Monday, July 9.

The bridge is located on Northeast Index Creek Road near the community of Baring, which is between Index and Skykomish on State Route 2 (Stevens Pass Highway). Crews from the King County Road Services Division will be repairing both timber and steel parts of the bridge that are deteriorating. Work is expected to be completed by July 30.

During the work, Northeast Index Creek Road will be closed from 639th Avenue Northeast to 641st Avenue Northeast between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Traffic will be allowed to pass through at the top of each hour, but motorists should expect long delays.

The Baring Bridge was originally constructed in 1930 and rebuilt in 1952. It is a timber suspension bridge that provides sole access for residents living south of the river.
