Chautauqua Beach Road reopens, roadwork delayed

The King County Road Services Division will reopen Chautauqua Beach Road on Vashon Island several weeks early, because a scheduled road repair project has been delayed. The road will reopen at Southwest Ellisport Road at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Aug. 8.

The road was scheduled to be closed through Aug. 31 while crews replaced two underground culverts. Work began on Aug. 1, but crews encountered soil contaminated with diesel oil from an old lumber and greenhouse operation near that location. The road project cannot be carried out until the contaminated soil is removed.

The Roads Division is working closely with the King County Solid Waste Division to assess the contamination and plan for its removal.
