It's a simple approach to easing congestion and speeding up bus service. Metro's bus rapid transit service, which it has branded 'RapidRide', will eventually implement five routes on the county's busiest corridors. The first 'RapidRide' line, the 'A-line' will go into effect next year serving several south King County cities. See the prototype bus and station.

2007 Operator of the Year: Two for the price of one

Every year, King County Metro Transit honors its Operator of the Year, and this year it's two for the price of one. When the 84 fellow Operators of the Month got together to vote for Operator of the year, they came up with an exact tie in voting, so Nate Chappelle and Richard Boehmer both took the award home.

It's a very appropriate description for the two deputies and one former Metro deputy that were recently honored by King County Sheriff Sue Rahr. Current deputy Patrick McCurdy received Metro Deputy of the year, and Tim Shook got the Lifesaver Award for rescuing a hiker who had been stranded in the woods for days. Sergeant Jim Laing received the highest honor the sheriff's office gives out, the Medal of Valor, for interrupting an armed robbery in progress.

'Transit Now' turns one, Metro service expands again

The 'Transit Now' initiative passed just in time. King County voters asked for up to 20 percent more bus service in November of 2006. It was a good thing, because Metro had another banner year with its highest ridership ever in 2007. By the end of 2008, thanks to 'Transit Now', about 100,000 hours of new service will be in place.

Commuters did a whole lot more than just survive during a schedule 19-day closure of northbound lanes of I-5 in August, they hopped Metro buses and packed the Elliott Bay Water Taxi. The predicted gridlock was avoided thanks to the transit options commuters took advantage of.

It's King County Metro Transit's way of putting its money where its mouth is. King County voters approved 'Transit Now' in November increasing tax revenue for more transit service. Now Metro is teaming up with General Motors, New Flyer Industries, and Cummins Engine Company to deliver as many as 500 new hybrid buses over the next decade.
