On top of the work done on county roads themselves during harsh winter weather, much is also done behind-the-scenes to keep all that equipment moving. See the big effort King County's fleet mechanics put in to keep the sanders and plows running, and in turn to keep county residents moving on King County Metro buses.

The King County Road Services Division monitors and repairs about 2,300 traffic signals in unincorporated parts of the county and contract cities. It does so using a hybrid utility trucks that saves 30-40 percent on diesel and therefore the greenhouse gas produced by that fuel. It also just received a second hybrid flat-bed tow truck.

They're smaller, quieter, and most importantly cleaner. At this year's Clean Vehicles Now! Conference at Qwest Field in September, King County Executive Ron Sims announced a 'green fleet initiative' to join with 20 other cities and commit to buying and driving cleaner vehicles.

County donates PC's to worthwhile cause

They're computers King County no longer needs, but they end up fully functional all over the globe. The Global Technology Academy, made up of students from Garfield High School among a few others, takes the surplused county computers and refurbishes them, before traveling to places like Ghana, the Philippines, Turkey, and Tanzania to donate them to people who don't yet have computer technology.

It's a win-win situation. King County's Fleet Division has a boatload of items to sell and bargain hunters are always looking for a deal. In March, the Fleet Division held another successful Spot Bid Auction, selling items from laptops to an 1850's Saxon Artillery Sword.

More hybrids on the way

They may do some heavy-duty work, but their emissions will be lighter than their ancestors'. The King County Department of Transportation has partnered with 13 other agencies to form the Northwest Hybrid Truck Consortium. The agency has already ordered 10 medium and heavy-duty hybrid utility trucks, with more on the way.
