Accessible Services Advisory Committee

2008 Accomplishments

Access application process

ASAC began an intensive review of the client eligibility and re-certification process for use of Metro’s Access Transportation Service, working collaboratively with Metro staff. The committee’s goal is to develop an advisory recommendation on the eligibility process from the customer’s point of view—from the time a customer requests information about paratransit service through the application process, including the functional evaluation at Harborview Medical Center, eligibility letter, appeal process, and recertification.

ASAC and Metro staff members worked to identify and describe in detail the work-flow process and the customer’s experience in each step, looking for areas that might be changed to improve the customer’s experience while still meeting Metro’s business needs.

Evening service

ASAC sent a letter to Metro management about the need for Access Transportation Service on weekday evenings throughout the county. The committee also sent a letter to the Metropolitan King County Council supporting then-King County Executive Ron Sims’ proposed increase for Access Transportation Service fares, but expressed concern about the proposed 50-percent increase in the cost of an Access pass as disproportionately affecting riders with limited fixed incomes. The committe also expressed its support for the exploration of new revenue sources for transit.

Additional feedback

ASAC monitored and provided feedback to Metro about the following issues:

  • RapidRide, including the vehicle features, shelters, facilities, stops, and signs
  • Metro Transit bus stop signs
  • Metro Transit’s compliance with the requirement to announce certain bus stops, intersections, and landmarks on buses
  • The future on-board system for automated stop announcements on buses
