The Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran a photo of Hamilton’s flight in the next day’s edition.

Blog marks centennial of Seattle’s first flight

Headline: “Plane first flew in Seattle 100 years ago, crashed the next day”

March 2010—A posting on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Aerospace News blog noted that it’s been 100 years since daredevil aviator Charles Hamilton piloted the first airplane to fly in Washington state. The flight took place at a race track known as “The Meadows,” which later became King County International Airport/Boeing Field.

Hamilton entertained onlookers by “cavorting about in the air” and buzzing some seagulls that were “riding in a puddle in a corner of the grounds” during his first flight on March 11. This was a preliminary flight before a planned three-day exhibition starting the next day. Unfortunately, Hamilton crashed into a lake on the first day of public flying.

Hamilton survived the crash with minor injuries and was rescued from the water by two spectators.
