Volunteer stylist Randi Stewart takes a little off the sides for ARFF Deputy Tim McClung. The Airport Rescue and Firefighting unit hosted a “Buzz Cut Night” in November to show support for Chief Greg Dymerski of the King County Sheriff’s Office, who is battling lymphoma, and to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event featured professional hair stylists with clippers at the ready. Attendees included King County Sheriff Sue Rahr and staff members from Boeing Fire and Rescue, plus several of the airport’s mutal aid partners. Quite a few who came to watch ended up deciding to participate. The event raised $1,355 in donations. The ARFF Unit is also raising funds to support its participation in the 2010 Scott Firefighters Stairclimb at the Columbia Tower in March. (Read an account of last year’s climb below.) Co-captains Patricia Tonsgard, left, and Lidia Gonzalez, right, prepare goodies for the airport’s potato bake. Every October, employees of King County International Airport participate in the American Heart Association’s Seattle Heart Walk as the “Wing Walkers.” In addition to raising pledges for walking, the airport has worked for several years to find new and different ways to raise donations for the Heart Association. This year, employees hosted a “potato bake” employee luncheon—with all the fixings—to raise money. “Too many of us have been affected by heart disease or stroke,” said Patricia Tonsgard of the airport’s Maintenance Division, who served as this year’s co-chair along with Lidia Gonzalez, also from Maintenance. “My mother and grandmother both died of heart disease, and I have set a personal goal to raise funds needed for critical heart disease and stroke research and education,” Tonsgard said. All told, the airport’s luncheon and the efforts of the six enthusiastic Wing Walkers raised $1,100 for the American Heart Association. To top Airport’s ARFF Unit completes stairclimb
A Hot Potato wears his “silvers” with pride. Earlier this year, 13 men and women of the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit took part in the grueling Scott Firefighter Stairclimb at the Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle, placing 16th out of 225 fire departments in overall fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As if climbing the building’s 69 flights wasn’t punishment enough, our team was the only one wearing reflective “silvers”—reflective uniforms made for fighting extremely hot aircraft fires. Wearing their silvers on the climb required months of intensive training and additional hard work to build the necessary endurance, and earned the team its name: the Baked Potatoes. The ARFF unit conducts ongoing training so it is always prepared to serve the airport and our customers. Unit members are not only firefighters, but also King County Sheriff’s deputies. The airport staff salutes the team for its achievement. Go, Baked Potatoes! To top |
