Congratulations to Boeing on 787 Dreamliner’s first flight

Dec. 2009—Gray and rainy weather failed to dampen the spirits of thousands of people who came out to see the historic first flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The 787 Dreamliner features new “green” technologies. As much as 50 percent of its primary structure is made of composite materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced resin. The new design also includes a new interior that offers cleaner air, larger windows, more stowage space, and other passenger conveniences. The 787 will also use 20 percent less fuel than today’s jets of comparable size.

The jet left Everett’s Paine Field at 10 a.m. and flew for about three hours while its crew ran tests. It landed around 1:30 p.m. in front of a cheering crowd at King County International Airport/Boeing Field.

The flight kicked off a nine-month flight-test program in which six aircraft will fly nearly around the clock from King County International Airport’s Boeing flight test location. The first delivery to a commercial airline—All Nippon Airways in Japan—is scheduled for late 2010.
