Funding for the new South Park BridgeOct. 15, 2010 update!King County Executive Dow Constantine congratulates Senator Patty Murray for her leadership to help secure the $34 million TIGER II grant that completes financing for new South Park Bridge. King County's TIGER II Grant
On Aug. 20, 2010, King County submitted a grant application for federal funds from the second round of Transportation Infrastructure Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant funding known as TIGER II. The County requested $36.2 million. King County's TIGER II application focused on the national impacts of freight delay from closure of South Park and detours onto the heavily travelled 1st Avenue South Bridge. On Oct. 15, 2010, the TIGER II awards were announced, and King County learned it would receive $34 million in TIGER II grant funding. These federal dollars complete King County's efforts to secure funding for construction of a new South Park Bridge. A replacement for the 81-year old South Park Bridge has been a top priority for King County Executive Dow Constantine. Executive Constantine forged key partnerships, met with state and congressional leaders and traveled to Washington D.C. to emphasize the importance of a new bridge. Those efforts have resulted in firm pledges of funding totaling $100 million. The new bridge will take two to two-and-a-half years to be built and is expected to open to traffic in 2013. |
