Employer requirements for the Green Bike Project (GBP)

  • The employer is required to be a CTR-affected worksite in King County
  • The employer is required to have a minimum of 5 and up to 15 employees eligible to participate in the GBP.  Please note that these are employees who are currently driving alone for the majority of their commutes, not current bicycle commuters.  In order to meet the minimum employee participation, an employer may extend participation in the GBP to employees in worksites that are not CTR-affected.  The primary audience of the GBP is commuters at CTR-affected worksites in King County.
  • The employer must partner in the GBP by providing:
    1. secure bicycle parking for all bicycle commuters
    2. access to showers, clothes lockers or closets for all bicycle commuters
    3. an Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) or Bike Mentor to help manage the project and act as a liaison between GBP participants and King County
    4. an investment in bicycle gear or incentives to all bicycle commuters (not just those in the GBP - we don't want your current bicycle commuters to feel left out!)  The choice and amount of the investment is entirely up to the employer.

One of the goals of the GBP is to develop a sustainable bicycle commute culture at participating employer worksites.

Getting management interested in the GBP

Gauge management interest by asking the following questions. If the answer to any is "yes," you have a good reason to participate:

    • Is management interested in reducing its carbon footprint?
    • Do you have employees who still drive alone because they live relatively close to work and feel that any other option takes too long?
    • Is your management interested in reducing employee healthcare costs associated with conditions relating to lack of exercise?
    • Are employees looking for ways to cut back on commuting and transportation costs?
    • Are you looking for a way to grow your bicycle commuting program?
    • Are you looking for a way to further reduce your drive alone commutes?
    • Would management be interested in possible media exposure related to participation in the Green Bike Project?
