Stay in School Program

Stay_in_SchoolThe Stay in School Program improves young people’s educational achievement levels by providing a comprehensive mix of year-round services to youth in danger of not completing high school. Through this work, we increase levels of academic achievement and awareness of career and post-secondary options. We also build skills they will need to be successful in school and work.

Services 

The services offered by the program include:

  • Access to post-secondary education
  • Case management
  • Credit retrieval through summer and fall work and learn experiences
  • Employment placement
  • Other individualized services
  • Tutoring

Program Locations 

Stay in School Program services are offered at each of the following schools:

  • Evergreen High School
  • Foster High School
  • Kent Meridian High School
  • Renton High School
  • Thomas Jefferson High School
  • Todd Beamer High School
  • Truman High School
  • Tyee High School

For students attending Highline School District, an additional site, New Start, is also available. This alternative school, managed by the Highline School District, is located in White Center.

Eligibility

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for the Stay in School Program:

  • Are between the ages of 16-18 (18-year-old male participants are required to register with selective service);
  • Are considered “at-risk” of dropping out of school;
  • Are low-income or have a disability;
  • Have sufficient documentation for employment; and
  • Attend one of the program’s partner schools. These are listed under the Program Locations above.  

New Start Program Eligibility for Employment Services 

The New Start Program in White Center has additional eligibility criteria for its employment services. To be eligible for this program, which is operated by King County Superior Court - Community Programs, youth must be:

Youth who are 14 to 21 years old; and

  • Be an offender, at-risk of becoming an offender, and/or have a juvenile justice record; or
  • Be gang affiliated, at-risk of gang affiliation, or have previously been involved with a gang.  

How to Apply

Student recruitment for summer projects begins in March and ends in June. For fall projects, recruitment begins in March and continues until September.

Students need to be referred to the Stay in School Program by school counselors, court workers, teachers, or staff from partner schools. If you are a parent interested in enrolling your child, contact the your child’s school counselor or the Work Training Program at 206-263-9039 or work.training@kingcounty.gov
