Sexual assault is a serious problem—one that affects the lives of thousands of women, men, children, adults and families in King County every year. Any unwanted sexual contact, either physical or verbal, is a sexual assault. All forms of sexual assault are violating and traumatic.

In 2005, the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) provided services to 3,436 sexual assault victims in King County. However, because only six to 10 percent of victims report the abuse to another person or authority, we know the number of victims served is not the true number of victims. Of those who did report a sexual assault to KCSARC in 2005, 83 percent were female and 17 percent male. Seventy percent were children and teenagers.

In King County, numerous organizations are working toward sexual assault prevention and rehabilitation of sexual assault victims and their friends and families.
