Nov. 14, 2008 No Water Search on Green River this WeekendRiver too high, too fast
The Sheriff's Office decided this afternoon that the Green River will be running too fast this weekend for divers to search for the 13 year-old victim from last Friday’s crash. The accident also killed a 2 year-old boy.
River conditions will prevent searchers from taking boats on the river as well.
Instead, ground searchers and Guardian One will comb the banks of the river downstream from where the car entered the water at about the 29000 block of the Green River Road SE.
According to monitors placed by the U.S. Geological Survey near Auburn, the river was at 9,020 cubic feet per second (CFS) at 1:45 PM this afternoon (Friday, November 14th). Divers can’t go into the water until the river is running at less than 2,000 CFS, and boats are ineffective until the flows fall below about 4,000 CFS.
By way of comparison, when Sheriff's Office divers recovered the car and the 2 year-old victim on Tuesday, November 11th, the river was at about 1800 CFS.
The Sheriff's Office will monitor flows and return to water searches as soon as it is safe to do so.
