Regional Disaster Plan for public and private organizations in King County

Since 1998 the Regional Disaster Planning Group (RDPG) has been collaboratively working on developing the basic plan and support documents that make up the Regional Disaster Plan (RDP) for public and private organizations in King County, Washington. The RDPTF has been meeting regularly and includes disciplinary representatives from: cities, fire service, law enforcement, hospitals, public health, water and sewer, schools, businesses, tribes, nonprofits, associations, etc. The Regional Disaster Plan is a unique "mutual aid agreement" that establishes the framework to allow public, private and nonprofit organizations an avenue to efficiently assist one another during a disaster through:

  • a plan that addresses organizational responsibilities;
  • an agreement that addresses legal and financial concerns; and
  • support documents that address specific operational elements of any disaster (transportation, health and medical services, public information, communications, etc.)

History and background information

In January 2002, the first dissemination package of the Regional Disaster Plan was sent out to approximately 500 elected officials and directors with public, private and nonprofit organizations in King County. They were invited to adopt and sign on to the Regional Disaster Plan for Public and Private Organizations in King County, Washington for cross-disciplinary sharing of resources during disasters in the King County region. This web page was created to facilitate information sharing and easier distribution of the Regional Disaster Plan.

The RDP is a growing document with new chapters (emergency support functions or appendices) released each year. To date, there are over 140 signatories to the Regional Disaster Plan, with the commitment to help one another when disaster hits our region.

In 2006 and 2007, the Regional Disaster Planning Task Force revised and updated the Regional Disaster Plan to align with the National Response Plan, resulting in the following overall changes for all sections of the plan:

  • Changed the format, organized some sections differently to reflect changes from the National Response Plan.
  • Included Indian tribal references in the document.
  • Added language for the National Incident Management System.
  • Corrected grammar and spelling errors.
  • Changed the name for the King County EOC to King County ECC and made these changes and references to the King County ECC consistent throughout the document.
