July 11, 2009 88 homeless pets find new forever homes at King County Super Pet Adopt-a-thon
Tails were wagging and the sound of purrs were in the air as 88 homeless pets went home with new families from the Super Pet Adopt-a-thon hosted Saturday, July 11 by King County Animal Care and Control in Kent.
Excited pet seekers formed a long line even before the doors opened hoping for the best chance at the animals. By noon more than 700 people had attended the event, which exceeded last year's attendance by more than 200 people.
Pet lovers also had a chance to meet all their animal needs in one place with dog trainers, pet retailers and other animal-related vendors set up on the grounds of the shelter.
Besides the numerous adoptions at the event, King County Animal Care and Control volunteers organized hourly raffle drawings and a silent auction which raised money for the shelter's Angel Fund. The fund provides veterinary care for abused, sick and injured animals at the county shelter or in foster care.
However King County Animal Care and Control's facilities in Kent and Bellevue still have a number of animals in need of adoption.
To promote adult cat adoptions during the summer kitten season months, King County Animal Care and Control is waiving the adoption fee on all cats over one year old. For just the $30 cost of the pet license, adopters can get an adult cat that has been spayed or neutered, with vaccinations (including rabies shots) and a microchip.
