Aboveground Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) tank permit instructions

LPG tank Applicant/Installer:

The Department of Development and Environmental Services and the King County Fire Marshal Division have simplified the process for obtaining a permit to install aboveground liquid propane tanks (LPG) which do not exceed 2,000 gallon capacity and are located on residential properties. This process is not applicable for commercial developments, nor is it applicable for LPG dispensing on commercial or residential sites.

Application requirements for aboveground residential LPG tanks under 2,000 gallons are as follows:

  • A completed Fire System Tank Permits: Affidavit for Application form in PDF(84KB) or fill-in Word(121KB) format

  • 3 copies of a legible and engineered scaled site plan on letter/legal size paper showing the size and proposed location of the LPG tank, all parcel property lines, all buildings or structures on the parcel and streets, roads, alleys which abut the property

  • Completed Tank Fee Sheet, page two of either PDF(79KB) or fill-in Excel(24KB) format

  • Applicable permit fees as determined on the Tank Fee Sheet.

Upon receipt of a complete LPG tank application, a permit will be issued as a Subject to Field Review and Inspection.

A copy of the Field Inspection Check Sheet will be provided for your information at the time of permit issuance. The inspection form details which items the fire inspector will be checking when the subject to field inspection is conducted. A copy of the inspection report will be left on-site. Your LPG tank permit will be given final inspection approval upon satisfactory completion of all requirements.

All subject to field inspections of LPG tank installations shall be requested either online at http://inspections.kingcounty.gov or by calling the inspection request line at 1-888-5-INSPCT (1-888-546-7728). Inspection requests are scheduled by fire inspectors in a timely manner and as determined by workloads. Every attempt to schedule an inspection as soon as possible will be considered. Call 206-296-6630 with any LPG tank questions you may have.

A gas-piping permit shall be obtained from the Seattle King County Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Services. Please call 206-296-4932 for permit information. Final inspection/approval of the gas-piping permit is required prior to final approval of your LPG tank permit.
