Background

  • First comprehensive update of the Countywide Planning Policies since originally adopted in 1992
  • Incorporates VISION 2040, adopted in 2008
  • Reflects changes in the State Growth Management Act and other state laws
  • Updates references to new agencies and organizations
  • Focuses on cross-jurisdictional and regional issues

Approved by the Growth Management Planning Council (GMPC)

  • Approved by the GMPC on September 21, 2011
  • King County Executive will transmit to King County Council for review and adoption
  • King County Council will send to all jurisdictions for ratification
  • Ratification = 30% of jurisdictions representing 70% of the county population
  • Certification by the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC)

Major Changes

  • Promotes coordination and collaboration among jurisdictions within King County
  • Establishes environmental sustainability as a foundational principle
  • Promotes economic growth and job creation
  • Integrates public health with land use and transportation
