Fire safety: Earthquake preparedness

The Puget Sound area had a wake-up call with the Nisqually Quake in 2001, and hopefully many of you were prepared for an earthquake.

For those of you who were not prepared, listed below are items that should be kept in a safe and dry location in the case of an emergency. These items will provide for basic survival needs and will prepare you for the 72 hours that may pass prior to receiving more than just extreme emergency existence.

• Battery-powered flashlights and lanterns
• Battery-powered AM/FM radio or television
• Spare batteries
• Extra change of clothes
• Sturdy shoes with thick soles
• Complete first aid kit
• Matches stores in waterproof container
• Fresh drinking water (3-5 gallons per person per day)
• Canned food (up to 5 days supply)
• Dry or dehydrated foods (up to 5 days supply)
• Manual can opener
• Paper plates
• Plastic utensils and cups
• Moist towelettes
• Pet food
• Pet leashes
• Blankets/bedding
• Toothbrush/toothpaste
• Toilet paper
• Sanitary napkins
• Antibacterial soap
• Extra glasses/contacts
• Work gloves
• Earthquake survival guide
• List of important telephone numbers
• Small amount of cash
• Prepaid telephone calling card
• Tent
• Sleeping Bags
• Fire Extinguisher
• Rain gear.
