Flood Protection Work Has Begun

King County’s aging flood prevention infrastructure is being repaired and updated this summer. Flooding has devastating impacts on land, commerce, and people’s lives. As a result, preemptive actions are necessary to preserve the well being of our community. 55 projects will be completed during the summer season in anticipation of this Fall’s heavy rainfall. Keeping BNSF in Public Hands

I was honored to be on hand for the official signing of the historic agreement between King County, the Port of Seattle and BNSF Railways that brought the Eastside Rail Corridor into public ownership. On May 5, the County Council unanimously approved the agreement, in which the Port will purchase the 42-mile corridor that stretches from Renton to the city of Snohomish and King County agree to lease a 26-mile trail easement from Renton to Woodinville. By bringing the corridor into public ownership, we have preserved a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to utilize a dual-use approach of rails with trails.  Read more

King County Animal Shelters

Both short and long term solutions have been proposed in order to address the crisis occurring in our animal shelters. The Council and Executive have provided funding to provide immediate relief for overcrowding, lack of spay/neuters, and untreated medical conditions. This summer, King County Animal Care and Control will undergo a strategic planning process, at the direction of the King County Council and the Executive. In September, the Council will make a decision about what the county’s role in animal sheltering services will be. Once the process begins, I will provide regular updates on my website.
