Burke Gilman Trail capital improvement project

Project summary

PROJECT UPDATE: King County Parks will have survey crews working along the Burke Gilman Trail for the next 8 to 12 weeks starting the first week in December. King County Parks will be surveying the trail right of way, the trail centerline and other points along the trail to finalize the design and construction documents and to prepare for construction. Please note, there will be survey flags and survey stakes placed to mark the trail right of way which is outside of the trail footprint and the construction limits, however they will be on located on the King County Parks' property. Please do not remove any survey flags or stakes along the trail as they provide valuable information and are necessary for construction of the trail project.

The Burke Gilman Trail Redevelopment began in 2004 with a study which evaluated approximately two miles of the Burke Gilman Trail through Lake Forest Park from NE 145th Street to Log Boom Park, and includes recommendations for how the trail can be redesigned and rebuilt to provide for the safety of all users, as well as adjoining homeowners. This segment of trail includes issues ranging from impaired sightlines and inadequate signage to cracks in the pavement-all of which are problematic for cyclists, drivers, pedestrians, adjacent homeowners, and other users. A pre-design study was conducted in 2005 analyzing problems and possible solutions for the trail. The landscape architecture firm of MacLeod Reckord has completed the design, and will oversee the project through construction. Construction of the trail is expected to begin Spring 2010.

Citizens Advisory Group (CAG)

A Citizens Advisory Group (CAG) was convened by King County to ensure the Trail Redevelopment Study reflected the input and values of our multi-faceted community. The community advisory group is part of a collaborative effort between King County and Lake Forest Park to ensure the representative community input is considered in the redevelopment of the trail. The Mission of the CAG is to provide King County with thoughtful and informed recommendations on issues related to the proposed redevelopment of the Burke Gilman Trail through Lake Forest Park. It is understood that the CAG's viewpoint and subsequent recommendations are intended to be a reflection of the public’s various positions. CAG input will include: design, safety, liability, maintenance, enforcement and environmental concerns.
