Burke Gilman Trail Redevelopment ProjectProject summary
The construction is now complete. Thank you for your patience during construction!
How was the trail improved? The redevelopment project improved the safety of the trail by widening it to a 12-foot trail with soft surface shoulders, enhancing traffic controls and intersection and crossing treatments, and installing lighting and other trail amenities. Other upgrades include a new stormwater system, retaining walls, slope stabilization, replacement of the Lyon Creek Bridge, and installation of native vegetation.

Complete Construction | Project history
Beginning in mid-June, King County will start a major safety improvement project along the oldest and narrowest section of the Burke Gilman trail by redeveloping the two-mile long trail segment through Lake Forest Park from Northeast 145th Street to Logboom Park in Kenmore.
The 33-year-old trail's condition has deteriorated and no longer meets the Association of State of Highway Transportation Officials and King County's Regional Trail Standards. The trail’s existing condition includes limited sight distances due to encroaching vegetation and fencing, silted and or filled in drainage ditches, deteriorated trail surface, outdated intersection features, signage conflicts with traffic engineering best practices and narrow and deteriorated bridge and bridge abutments.
The trail redevelopment includes new, safer updated trail features such as an improved trail surface, improved intersection and crossing treatments, drainage improvements, bridge and abutment replacement and new signage, fencing and bollards.
Because of the narrow corridor, limited trail access, topographic constraints and the extent of the redevelopment project, this portion of the trail is considered a construction zone and will be closed during construction to protect the safety of trail users, homeowners and construction workers. The trail will be closed to all use from Northeast 145th Street to the Lake Forest Park-Kenmore boundary just south of Logboom Park in Kenmore beginning June 15.
King County has spent more than five years on planning and design work for this redevelopment project, with ongoing involvement of a citizen's advisory group and in close coordination with the Cities of Seattle, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore.
