Record Group 052 BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY
The Board of Equalization heard appeals to tax valuations for real and personal property. It also had the power to adjust the assessor's valuations. The board members were the three County Commissioners, the County Treasurer, and the County Assessor. The 1969 Home Rule Charter replaced the Board of Equalization with the Board of Appeals. Following revisions to the charter, the board was later formally designated the King County Board of Appeals and Equalization. This combined board, when acting as the King County Board of Equalization, hears and decides decide all appeals from any property valuation by the Department of Assessments. In its capacity as the King County Board of Appeals, the same members of the board hear and decide appeals of animal control laws violations, certain business license decisions, violations of minor zoning regulations, and Council authorized assessments funding lake management districts.
