Research, Copy and Reproduction Fees

Basic Access Policy:

There is no charge for the retrieval of public records for research and inspection. Staff of the King County Archives can only spend a limited amount of time on research (less than 30 minutes) per each request. Research is defined as the collection, assembly or extraction of data or information from records, or the analysis of information to provide a report.

The ability of the Archives to provide research services may be limited, depending on staffing levels and workload. In such cases, patrons may be referred to an independent researcher for assistance. The King County Archives endorses no particular researcher or company. Below are some links that you can use to help locate a records retrieval specialist:

The division charges a reasonable fee for making copies of public records, regardless of media. The charges reflect the amount necessary to reimburse the Archives for the actual costs of equipment and supplies incident to such copying. For oversize copies, the King County Archives can provide you with an estimate of costs before an order is placed.

Archivists will determine whether the original records may be copied due to age and fragility. You can also review the King County Archives standard procedures for viewing our records.
