Overview
In Managing Data Using SQL and GIS Tools, students will explore and manipulate data stored in stand-alone business tables and establish relationships with that data in GIS. The class will expose students to the basics of Structured Query Language (SQL), a database management language, which has many applications in ArcGIS.
The information provided by the King County Department of Assessments will provide an extended example. Students will use SQL in an Access database and tools in ArcGIS to import, explore, manipulate and export tabular data. The uses of SQL inside an ArcMap session and inside an Access session will be described and practiced.
Audience
This class is for those students who are not familiar with SQL or how table relationships are formed with GIS layers, but have been or will be encountering it in their ArcGIS workflow. An understanding of table structures is not necessary.
Goals
Students will learn how to import and explore data using ArcGIS 10.x, specifically, King County Assessor data.
Students will use Access templates to manipulate data to make it ready to use in ArcGIS.
Students will learn how to establish table relationships with GIS data.
Students will learn how to use SQL in the ArcMap Select By Attributes dialog to select data from spatial or tabular data.
Students will learn how to use SQL SELECT statements, functions, and subqueries to manipulate and process their data outside of an ArcMap session.
