King County GIS Data Distribution

King County GIS Data is made available to the general public in two ways.

Standard Data Disc:  (published four times a year)

Beginning in April 2009, we will ONLY offer geodatabase format for the Standard Disc (shapefiles will be available through a custom data order).

A standard set of data, loaded conveniently onto one DVD, is issued four times per year (January, April, July, and October). The disk includes a large subset of the GIS vector data files that are stored and maintained in "plibrary," the enterprise data warehouse that is accessible to all internal KCGIS users. The disk also includes parcel data in tabular form.

King County Department of Assessments offers downloadable database file extracts. If you have a slow connection or need the hard media, you may contact them directly at (206) 296-7300.

Custom Data and Imagery Requests
How to Order Custom Data Custom data and imagery requests are fulfilled by KCGIS Center Client Services staff. Your data request will be reviewed carefully, and a custom data set will be defined to best meet your needs. Several delivery options are available. Mininum cost is $295.00.

Purchase price covers staff time, cost of blank media, and outside vendor expenses when applicable (for disk production). Agencies that have complementary data holdings may contact us regarding potential data sharing agreements.

How to Buy the Standard Data Disc

Payment: Checks are gladly accepted for mail order and in-person data disk purchases. Cash is accepted for in-person purchases only. We cannot perform credit card transactions.

To Order by Mail

  1. Download and print a Standard Data Disk order form (24kb PDF)
  2. Fill out the form; make sure you:
    • calculate and enter the cost of your order
    • Washington State Orders: include shipping and handling plus applicable sales tax
    • Out of State Orders: do not include sales tax
  3. Sign the Terms and Conditions (page two of the form).
  4. Mail the form, including the signed Terms and Conditions, and a check (please do not mail cash) for the full cost of your order to the address shown on the form.

To Purchase In Person

  1. The KCGIS Standard Data disk is sold over the counter at the Department of Transportation, Road Services Division, Map and Records Center on the ground floor of the King Street Center in downtown Seattle (hours: 8:00am to 4:30pm, M-F). The King Street Center is located on the east side of Second Avenue South between South Jackson and South King streets (see location map and directions). The entrance to the Map and Records Center is through the main building lobby (across the lobby from the Metro Customer Service Office, to the right of the building directory). There is limited public parking in the building's parking garage, which is entered from South King Street. For bus information, check Metro Online. The International District Bus Tunnel Station is just a few blocks away.
  2. Ask for a Data Disk Purchase form at the counter, or bring one with you already filled out:

  3. Sign the Terms and Conditions (page two of the form).
  4. Give the completed form, including the signed Terms and Conditions, and cash or a check for the full cost of your order to the person at the counter.
  5. If a disk is in stock, it will be yours to take with you.

How to Order Custom GIS Data and Imagery

Payment: We'll arrange payment methods when you contact us. We cannot perform credit card transactions.

Procedure:

  1. E-mail us with a detailed description of your data needs, or contact Cheryl Wilder (206-263-5220) to describe your request.
  2. We will confirm your request, including a cost calculation.
  3. Write a check for this amount (payable to King County Finance Department).
  4. Download, print, and fill out a Custom Data Request form
  5. Mail the form and your check to the mailing address provided on the form.
  6. Work will commence upon receipt of your payment.

Data Delivery Options

  • E-mail attachment of data file(s)
  • FTP download
  • CD or DVD
    — mailed to you, or...
    — held for pick up by you here at the KCGIS Center

Indicate your preference on the order form. In-person pick-up requires 24-hour notice.

Turn-Around Time

Most custom data requests can be completed within seven to ten working days.
