Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions about the process.
Why are we moving?

County Executive Dow Constantine has asked King County agencies to find ways to reduce costs, improve service to residents, and be better stewards of our environment.

To accomplish those goals, many agencies have chosen to consolidate space. In addition, there is a need to find space for new functions like the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO) without having to sign a costly lease for privately-owned space.

The Facilities Management Division (FMD) has worked closely with King County agencies to identify ways to better manage their space. This in turn can help those agencies become more efficient and reduce costs. By making more efficient use of existing space, we can save taxpayer dollars and maximize our investment in facilities.

What is the timeline for completing the moves?
We anticipate that all moves will be complete by March 31, 2012. However, it is important to note that this is not an absolute deadline, but rather a guideline for the process. Unforeseen circumstances could force changes in the schedule. FMD will make every effort to keep you informed.

What will I need to do to prepare for our agency's move?

Since each agency is different, it's nearly impossible to cover every circumstance. However, here are some tips to make the move go more smoothly.

Take the time now to do some "spring cleaning." As we all know, after you've been in one place for a long time, things can pile up. Clear out old files, stacks of paper, or anything else you no longer use. Use the move as an opportunity to reduce clutter in your workspace. Contact Records Management for assistance regarding what files can be disposed, sent to the Records Warehouse, archived, or scanned. Scanning documents is a great way to save physical space.

Take personal items home for now. While FMD staff will handle relocating your work items (for example: PCs, monitors, chairs), they will not move your personal items. To reduce the chance of them getting lost in the transition, take them home for now, and bring them back once you get settled in your new area.

Don't go "measuring the curtains" yet. Lots of things have to happen in order for you to move to your new space, and circumstances may change. Also, in most cases there are already County business operations still occupying your "new" space. Please refrain from disturbing them as they prepare to move out of their "old" space. Building Services will schedule walkthroughs as the process moves forward so that you can look at your new space.

Don't make moving arrangements yet. FMD will let you know well ahead of time when it is your turn to move. Don't order boxes or other moving supplies, as FMD will take care of those items.

Work with your agency liaison. They will have the most up-to-date information about the status of your move. If you have questions about the process, please work through your agency liaison to get them answered. FMD staff will be very busy coordinating all the moves, and may not have time to stop and answer every question.

Watch the news blog, and this FAQ. FMD will be posting frequent updates on the project as it moves along. Many common questions will be answered via the blog or this FAQ.

Who is my Single Point of Contact (SPOC)?
FMD will be assigning Single Points of Contact (SPOCs) for each agency. Watch this space for a listing of those SPOCs coming soon.
