Excellence in Building Green Award for Chinook Building

The County's newest office building is targeting LEED Gold for core and shell work, and LEED Platinum for commercial interiors work. With 98% of the construction waste recycled, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, the Chinook Building is the template for the future county office buildings. Managers reused 90% of the furniture and furnishings throughout the building, installed bicycle storage, showers, a changing area, and activity for employee use; placed recycling centers on every floor, providing tenants with easy access to recycling; and will continue the ongoing use of green cleaning products and green housekeeping practices.

Excellence in Building Green Award for Marymoor Maintenance Building

Although this building project is modest in scope, the project team worked to ensure that it will achieve LEED certification. The facility was completed and occupied in July 2006. The project awaits a LEED Silver rating certification. The facility consists of an office and adjoining shop and a separate larger equipment storage facility. Rainfall is collected from the roofs of both buildings and saved in water storage tanks. Reclaimed water will be used to clean lawn and trail maintenance equipment. The office contains a break room, restrooms (with a waterless urinal), and a small shop. Recycled-content materials were used throughout both buildings. The award is made of recycled glass and were designed and created by Bedrock Industries, a King County Link-Up partner that produces several home and garden products using recycled glass.

2004 Awards

2004_Best_of_Renovation_Award

Best of Renovation Award for King County Courthouse Seismic Renovation

This is an award from NW Construction Magazine given to the Seismic Project Team. The team includes: the King County Facilities Division, The Seneca Real Estate Group, Development Manager; Skanska USA Building, Inc., General Contractor; and Coughlin Porter Lundeen, Structural Engineer. The $86 million seismic project was completed in 22 months as scheduled and on budget. The seismic retrofit was accomplished through use of a passive damping system that will dissipate the energy of an earthquake by acting like a shock absorber. In addition to the seismic strengthening of the structure, fire alarm and sprinkler systems have been installed on all floors as well as an upgraded heating and air conditioning system. All of this work was accomplished while the building remained occupied. The Courthouse Seismic Project was part of a conglomeration of projects in the courthouse totaling $105 million. The King County Courthouse is a historic concrete frame building constructed in 1914 with 6 original stories. A 1929 addition brought the building to its current height of approximately 215 feet and created 6 more stories of courtrooms and office space.
